TOWN COUNCIL ADOPTS FY 2012 BUDGET Real Estate Tax Rate Decreases to $.265 per $100 of Assessed Value, Meals Tax Increases to 2.5 percent At its public hearing on Tuesday, April 27, the Herndon Town Council adopted the budget for the town's 2012 fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2011 and ends June 30, 2012. Highlights of the $45,248,570 budget include a reduction in the real estate tax from its current $.2675 per $100 of assessed value to $.265 per $100 of assessed value. The decrease takes into account a general increase in real estate tax assessments and will result in an average $40.29 increase in per household real estate taxes paid to the town. The FY 2012 Budget increases the town's meals tax, from its current 1.5 percent to 2.5 percent. The revenues collected through this increase will be dedicated to downtown utility relocation; major road repaving; future funding of a downtown parking garage; and targeted promotion of the town's restaurant industry. The FY 2012 Budget supports initiatives included in Town Manager Art Anselene's proposed budget, including town resources dedicated to economic development, following recommendations provided to the town by its economic development task force. The budget provides for transitional funding for operation of the Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC) through October 2011, at which point Fairfax County will assume operation of the NRC. The budget also restores some programs that had been removed from the FY 2011 Budget, to include town participation in the National Night Out program and live entertainment at the town's 4th of July celebration. Copies of the budget are available for review at the Herndon Municipal Center, 777 Lynn St., Herndon.
