Art Anselene Bio

Arthur A. Anselene is the Town Manager for the Town of Herndon. In this capacity he has oversight responsibility for the Departments of Community Development, Finance, Parks and Recreation, Police and Public Works, as well as for the Human Resources, Information Technology, Public Information and Neighborhood Resources administrative functions. Anselene reports directly to the Mayor and Town Council and was appointed Town Manager in September 2007.

Prior to assuming the Town's top administrative post, Anselene was director of Parks and Recreation, a position he assumed in 1976. Under his leadership, the Parks and Recreation department became one of only 66 elite parks and recreation agencies in the country and the fourth in Virginia to receive national agency accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), and the department is a three-time winner of the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence by the National Recreation and Park Association and the National Sports Foundation, Inc. Anselene has overseen the development of a comprehensive parks and recreation system for the Town to include a dozen parks, the indoor tennis center at Bready Park and the flagship Herndon Community Center, first opened in 1979 and newly renovated in 2006.

Anselene holds a Bachelor of Science degree in recreation from Fairmont State College and a Master of Arts degree in recreation administration from the University of Maryland. He lives in Herndon with his wife, Susan.
