Living

For the 23,000+ residents who call it home, the Town of Herndon benefits from its proximity to a major metropolitan area - 22 miles from downtown Washington, DC - but also from its small town charm, its rich heritage and its strong sense of community. A key tenet of the Vision for the Town, crafted by Mayor DeBenedittis and the Town Council, is Maintaining a Residential Haven:

"The Town of Herndon boasts safe, secure, well-maintained neighborhoods that have escaped traffic congestion, overcrowding and the consequences of growth and development suffered by other metropolitan areas. It is an oasis of green spaces to come home to, where friendly neighbors create a nurturing atmosphere in which families prosper and grow."

In Virginia, incorporated towns are an integral part of the counties in which they are located. Fairfax County provides to the citizens of Herndon public education, library services, health and social services, mental health assistance, fire and rescue service, judicial services, correctional facilities and additional recreation services and facilities.
