Herndon Parks and Recreation
Herndon Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded the highest honor in the parks and recreation field, the 2008 Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Parks and Recreation Management by the American Academy for Parks and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). This is the fourth time the Herndon Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded the Gold Medal (previously in 1981, 1991, and 2001). The department was also a finalist in the competition in 1990 and 2007.
We constantly strive to enrich the lives of our residents, serve as stewards of Town resources, and foster a sense of community by providing diverse, accessible and valued parks, facilities and recreation programs. Parks and Recreation offers physical and leisurely activities for the community, supports the local arts, and collaborates with virtually every community group, building cooperation and cohesiveness in Herndon and the surrounding communities.
The department oversees the operation of the Herndon Community Center, located at 814 Ferndale Avenue. The year-round center offers a comprehensive leisure program and encompasses a multi-purpose rooms, gymnasium, three racquetball courts, catering kitchen, arts and crafts room, game room, teen, childcare and preschool rooms. The aquatics facility includes an eight-lane, 25-yard indoor swimming pool, diving and instructional areas, whirlpool, sauna, shower, and lockers. The indoor tennis center operates October through April and includes three tennis courts for reserved play time, leagues, lessons, and other activities. The department also sponsors many popular special events --- the Herndon Festival, Music Under the Stars Summer Concert Series, Labor Day Jazz and Wine Festival, --- and oversees the operation of eleven neighborhood parks.
The Town of Herndon is the third largest town in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is found in Northern Virginia, contained within Fairfax and Loudoun Counties. It has a close proximity to Dulles Airport and has eleven neighborhood parks, the Herndon Community Center, the W&OD Bike Trail and the Herndon Centennial Golf Course.
