The Community Circle Sculpture

The Herndon Town Council invites you to attend a reception to commemorate the sculpture and recognize the artist on Tuesday, November 17, at 6:00 pm at the Herndon Community Center. Light refreshments will be served. No RSVP needed - just show up.

The design of the Herndon Community Center renovation and addition included space for an outdoor art piece.  Research for an artist and an appropriate piece began in 2005.  In early 2006, the Town began working on concepts, with the clay model completed in July of that year.  The full-size clay model for the Lost Wax Method was completed in 2007, before completion at the foundry.  New Arts Foundry in Baltimore, Maryland performed the bronze work under the guidance of the artist, Marcia Billig.

Ms. Billig, created dozens of sculptures found around the Metro region and the United States.  Five of her pieces are recognized in the comprehensive book: Washington Sculpture:  A Cultural History of Outdoor Sculpture in the Nation's Capital.

The final element of the Herndon Community Center renovation ~ a bronze sculpture, "The Community Circle" ~ was installed on October 26, 2009.  The sculpture stands at the entrance and welcomes the public to the community center and represents leisure, community, fun, activity and the parks and recreation department mission. This sculpture is Herndon's first public art project.
