Herndon Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded the highest honor in the parks and recreation field, the 2008 Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Parks and Recreation Management by the American Academy for Parks and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). This is the fourth time the Herndon Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded the Gold Medal (previously in 1981, 1991, and 2001). The department was also a finalist in the competition in 1990 and 2007.
The department provides park and recreation programs and events to meet the diverse interests of our residents and surrounding communities. In addition, Herndon Parks and Recreation oversees the operation of the Herndon Community Center, located at 814 Ferndale Avenue. The year-round community center offers:
• State-of-the-art fitness center • 3 racquetball courts • 25-yard indoor heated pool, spa & sauna, and locker rooms • Full-size gymnasium • 3 outdoor and 3 indoor lighted tennis courts • Personal Training Services • Child care is available during dedicated hours • Classes galore - land and water fitness, swimming, tennis, yoga, dance, art, cooking, and much more
Multiple popular special events are produced by the department including, the Herndon Festival, Music Under the Stars, Labor Day Jazz Festival, and Nature Fest.
We constantly strive to enrich the lives of our residents, serve as stewards of Town resources, and foster a sense of community by providing diverse, accessible and valued parks, facilities and recreation programs. Parks and Recreation offers physical and leisurely activities for the community, supports the local arts, and collaborates with virtually every community group, building cooperation and cohesiveness in Herndon and surrounding communities.
