 Citizen Complaints

The Town of Herndon department of public works, building inspection section is responsible for responding to complaints regarding the following:

• New Construction
• Existing structure construction without a permit
• Property Maintenance
• Tall Grass
• Trash on private property

If you observe a violation or suspect someone is not complying with Town and/or State Code please notify the building inspection section by completing a citizen complaint form.



Complaint Process

1. Once a complaint is received by the Department's administrative staff it is forwarded to the appropriate inspector.
2. The inspector will go to the property that is in question and investigate the received complaint. 
3. If a violation is noted the inspector will either leave a door hanger, issue a Notice of Violation, or contact the owner personally. 
4. The property owner is given time to correct the violation as specified in Town and State Code... for example 10 days for trash and grass, per Town Code. 
5. If the property owner does not correct the violation within the specified time frame the violation is then forwarded to the Town Attorney's office for legal   action. (This does not include trash and grass violations)
6. Trash and grass violations that have not been corrected   by the owner are subject to correction by the Town at the owner's expense.
