Business Licenses
All businesses operating in the Town of Herndon are required to apply for and obtain a business license within 30 days from the day the business begins operations in the Town. All Town of Herndon business licenses are due by March 1st. Current year business license certificates will be mailed during the week of March 14th and must be displayed in your place of business.

How do I obtain a business license? A business located at a residential address must obtain a Zoning Inspection Permit. Businesses located in commercial establishments must obtain a Zoning Appropriateness Permit. For additional zoning requirements and information, contact the Department of Community Development in writing at P.O. Box 427, Herndon, VA 20172-0427, in person at the Herndon MunicipalCenter, 777 Lynn Street, Herndon, Virginia 20170, or by telephone (703)787-7380.
Business license applicants should either mail their application to P.O. Box 427, Herndon, Virginia 20172-0427 or hand deliver the application to the 1st floor revenue counter at the HerndonMunicipalCenter, located at 777 Lynn Street, Herndon, Virginia 20170. All applicants who file as individual or sole proprietor must also complete and have notarized a Residency Status Affidavit before a Town of Herndon business license can be issued.
Residency Status All individual and sole proprietors must provide proof of residency status as part of the business license application process. To establish proof of residency status, you may provide one of the following: · Notarized Residency Status Affidavit · Passport · Resident alien cards · Alien Registration cards or other documents designated by the Attorney General of the United States to determine legal status · The Town may also make the determination independently; or may make the determination by audit, verification, or field investigation.

What information is required to obtain a business license? Required information includes owner name, trade name, business address, description of business, estimated gross receipts from the date the business began operation through the end of the year, federal tax ID number, social security number (for individuals and sole proprietors only), number of employees and square footage occupied. All business licenses must be signed and dated prior to the issuance of a business license certificate.
How are business license taxes calculated? For emerging businesses with annual gross receipts of $0.00 up to and including $50,000, the license fee is $30. For emerging businesses with annual gross receipts of $50,001 up to and including $100,000, the license fee is $50. For other businesses, professions, trades, or occupations with annual gross receipts of more than $100,000 per year refer to the BPOL Gross Receipts Schedule for the appropriate license fee.

Business Personal Property Tax Business personal property that is located in the County of Fairfax as of January 1 each year must be declared on County tax forms. The filing deadline is May 1. http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dta/business_personalproperty.htm

Worker's Compensation Commission Any employer who has three or more regular employees is required to furnish worker's compensation insurance coverage at no cost to the employees. The insurance may be purchased through a private insurance company or the employer can apply to be self-insured.
