Rain Gardens
Stormwater runoff is the number one water quality problem in the United States and here in Northern Virginia as well. The Northern Virginia Regional Commission, the Town of Herndon, the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District (NVSWCD) and Arlington County are co-sponsoring the seminar to promote the use of rain gardens, which capture rain water and allow it to soak into the ground. Rain gardens are an attractive landscaping addition to any yard. Their ability to retain and filter water makes them useful in the residential landscape to solve drainage or standing water problems, in addition to supporting healthy waterways.
Rainfall runoff carries pollutants from hard surfaces such as rooftops, driveways, and parking lots to local streams, larger bodies of water, and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. Rain gardens allow stormwater to infiltrate into the ground, slowing its flow and preventing pollutants from reaching local streams and the Potomac and Occoquan Rivers, sources of drinking water for the region.
