Water Conservation Tips
KEEP COOL THIS SUMMER - WATER CONSERVATION TIPS The Town of Herndon's Department of Public Works (DPW) urges citizens to conserve water and keep streams and other waterways clean during the summer months by offering the following tips: Wash cars on lawns or other unpaved surfaces to minimize the amount of dirty, soapy water flowing directly into storm drains. OR use commercial car washes, at which water is typically recycled or flows into the sanitary sewer system to be treated.
Check boats, motorcycles and other equipment for leaks and spills. When it rains, leaking liquids may wash down storm drains and into streams. Clean any spilled liquids with absorbent materials such as sand or kitty litter and dispose of in trash.
Don't over-water lawns. Water during the cooler morning or evening hours, and don't let water run off into storm drains.
Sweep up yard debris, rather than hosing them down. Compost or recycle yard waste when possible.
Select native plants and grasses that are drought and pest-resistant, reducing the need for excess water, fertilizer or pesticides.
