Vision Statement
The area surrounding the Herndon-Monroe Metro station is a distictive employment center and residential neighborhood characterized by concentrated development that is vibrant, mixed use, transit-oriented and pedestrian friendly. Emerging development is interwoven with and strengthens the town's cultural fabric and sense of identity.
The proposed Silver Line Metrorail extension is anticipated to reach Herndon in 2017.
The Herndon Metrorail Station, to be located in the median of the Dulles Airport Access Road/Dulles Toll Road will be connected to the Town of Herndon and to the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride via pedestrian bridges.
On April 27, 2010 the Town Council voted to select a consultant team lead by Vanasse, Hangen, Brustline, Inc. to assist the Town in developing a Metrorail Area Plan for redevelopment of the commercial properties surrounding the future Herndon Metrorail Entrance Pavilion.
Commencing in July of 2010, numerous meetings with town residents as well as the property owners of the land involved were held. Community and property owner input continues through the Planning Commission and Town Council public hearing process.
To date the study has included transportation and fiscal and financal feasibility analysis, infrastructure analysis, and urban design alternatives as well as additional existing and future condition research and analysis. Options for safe, attractive and functional access to the Herndon Metrorail Pavilion have been studied and continue under consideration.
In November of 2011, a flaw in the transportation analysis was identified leading to additional study and reconsideration by the Planning Commission. Planning Commission review of the plan is anticpated to continue through January 2012. Return of the plan to the Town Council level is scheduled at this time for February 14, 2012.
