On February 28, 2012, the Town Council approved the Herndon Metro Station Area Plan, Comprehensive Plan Amendment, CPA #11-02, that outlines a vision for transit-oriented development adjacent to the future stop on Metrorail's Silver Line, which is anticipated to reach Herndon in 2017. In September 2012, the Town Council requested the staff to proceed with preparation of urban design guidelines for the Metro Station area. The guidelines will be the basis under which redevelopment applications are evaluated in the Metro Station area, along with all policies in the the Town's 2030 Comprehensive Plan.

The Town of Herndon is preparing for the opening of the Herndon-Monroe Metrorail stop, located in the median of the Dulles Toll Road adjacent to the existing park-and-ride garage on Sunrise Valley Drive. Once built, the metrorail station will be a stimulus for positive growth and change in Herndon. The Town is working to plan for this change and create an exciting new sense of place around the station.
