Town Of Herndon

Metrorail The Town of Herndon is preparing for the opening of the Herndon-Monroe Metrorail stop, located in the median of the Dulles Toll Road adjacent to the existing park-and-ride garage on Sunrise Valley Drive.  A pedestrian bridge will connect the station to land within the Town of Herndon, on the south side of Herndon Parkway.  The project is planned for completion in 2016.

Preparations include working with the community by sponsoring workshops. The first workshop was held on July 19th with an enthusiastic response.

After a short briefing, participants were asked to:

>   use electronic devices to vote on specific issues at the
     metrorail station;

>   visit information stations and provide their opinions;

>   have one-on-one conversations with experts;

>   look at slides and vote electronically on building forms that
     might be suitable at the Herndon metrorail station;

>   see a repeating slide show of snapshots in the Herndon study
     area;

>   see a repeating slide show of development around other metro
     stations.

The meeting was hosted by the Planning Commission in cooperation with the Herndon Town Council and by VHB, the town's project consultant.

Topics for discussion included:

1.   Ideas for new, vibrant and welcoming metro area development

2.   Ways to mitigate traffic impacts of the new Metrorail stop

3.   Opportunities and challenges in the planning process

An additional workshop is planned for the fall, with a final, community-wide vision to be presented in spring 2011.
