Comprehensive Planning
The Comprehensive Plan sets forth the Town's goals and policies regarding the natural and built environment. The policies and goals found in the Comprehensive Plan deal with all aspects of the Town's vision of the future. Community facilities, transportation, the natural environment, residential and commercial development, heritage preservation and the Town's commitment to preserve its character while accommodating appropriate infill development are covered within the Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan Map summarizes the Town's land use policies, providing guidance for decision makers considering rezonings and the appropriateness of future development.
In addition to drafting, updating and interpreting the Comprehensive Plan and Map, the long range planning staff coordinates the review and analysis of rezoning applications, administers the Chesapeake Bay Preservation overlay district regulations, and provides transportation planning services. Additional responsibilities include preparing the Town's annual Capital Improvement Program, tracking Town demographics, and managing the Town's participation in the Federal Census effort.
The Comprehensive Planning section is also responsible for a variety of cooperative planning efforts with Fairfax County and other jurisdictions. Many of these cooperative efforts relate to transportation planning, including work with the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority, the Fairfax Connector bus system, and other jurisdictions and agencies.
