Heritage Preservation Review Board
The Heritage Preservation Review Board is composed of seven members appointed by the Town Council. Members are appointed to serve a three-year term. At least one member shall be an architect or an architectural historian and one member must have knowledge in historic preservation.
Members review applications regarding the appropriateness of new construction, additions, alterations, and demolitions of structures. Amendments to previously approved applications within the Town's Heritage Preservation District also require a formal review.
Properties within the Heritage Preservation District are governed by additional regulations. To learn more about this district and the requirements, please visit the Related Links section of this page.
There are three types of sign permit applications that must be reviewed at a public hearing:
Free-standing sign; Wall or Window sign; and a Master Sign Plan for a unified commercial project.
Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month unless altered by a holiday schedule. Work sessions are held on the Wednesday preceding the public meeting. To confirm the work session dates, public hearing dates and application deadlines, please view the 2009 schedule.
You may view the current month's Agenda by selecting the button from the menu on the left.

In 1987 when the District was established, property owners were provided a copy of the Herndon Heritage Preservation Handbook. This Handbook was developed to provide guidance to property owners and developers on the many architectural features that are appropriate to the District. New property owners within the district are encouraged to contact the Department of Community Development to obtain a copy of the Handbook, or utilize the on-line version.
