Town Council Appoints Bill Ashton as Acting Town Manager
At its public meeting on Tuesday, January 10, Mayor Lisa C. Merkel and the Herndon Town Council appointed William H. “Bill” Ashton II as acting town manager, to fill the position vacated by retiring Town Manager Art Anselene.
Ashton, currently the town’s director of Information Technology, will assume the acting town manager post on February 1, 2017.
“Bill’s management experience and instincts, his operations expertise and his thorough knowledge of town policies make him the optimal candidate for this role,” said Merkel. “Herndon is at a critical juncture on many key projects. We need an executive at the reins who can jump right in and help navigate these projects toward completion. We are extremely fortunate to have Bill among our ranks and are grateful for his acceptance of this new role.”
Ashton joined the town’s staff in 1998 as Herndon’s first director of Information Technology. He is responsible for development and implementation of technologies that assist all town departments in providing services to town citizens. During his tenure, the town has received national recognition as a public sector technology leader.
Previously, Ashton worked in IT positions of increasing responsibility, both in the private sector and the federal government. He holds a BBA in Management Information Systems from James Madison University and a Master of Public Administration from George Mason University.
Anselene, the town’s current manager, retires on February 28, 2017. Merkel said the council will conduct a comprehensive search for Anselene’s permanent successor.
