HERNDON, Va. (March 23, 2026) – The Town of Herndon will soon install a new pedestrian crossing warning light at the W&OD Trail crossing on Crestview Drive. Work is expected to take place in the next few weeks. Once in place, the new system will make it easier for drivers to see people who are walking or biking across the street.

Pedestrian crossing warning lights, also known as rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) use bright, fast flashing yellow signals to draw a driver's attention. They are commonly used across the country to improve safety at busy trail and road crossings.

“Installing this new pedestrian crossing warning light is a proven way to make this trail crossing safer,” says the Town’s Transportation Engineer Mike Shindledecker. “National research shows that these systems greatly improve how well drivers notice and yield to people walking or cycling in the crosswalk.”

How to Use the New Crossing:

• For pedestrians and cyclists
  1. Press the button near the crosswalk.
  2. Wait for the yellow lights to begin flashing.
  3. Make sure drivers have fully stopped before you step into the crosswalk.
  4. Stay alert while crossing.
• For drivers

1. When the lights begin flashing, you must stop for anyone in the crosswalk.
2. Stay stopped until the crossing is completely clear.
3. Proceed carefully once all pedestrians and cyclists have finished crossing.
