New Director of Public Works Appointed

TOWN OF HERNDON APPOINTS NEW DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS

Herndon, VA (June 29, 2026) — The Town of Herndon is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael D. “M.J.” Johnson, PE as the Town’s new Director of Public Works, effective Monday, July 6, 2026.

Johnson brings more than two decades of leadership experience in public works, utilities, and infrastructure management.

“Michael’s extensive experience makes him an outstanding addition to our team,” said Dan Hoffman, Herndon’s Town Manager. “His ability to guide capital investment, strengthen operational performance, and maintain reliable public services will be critical as Herndon continues to grow and invest in its infrastructure.”

Johnson currently serves as Director of Public Works & Transportation for Prince George’s County, Maryland. Johnson served previously as Director of Public Works for the City of Annapolis, Maryland as well as in senior leadership roles in the City of Gaithersburg, Maryland and the City of East Orange, New Jersey. His experience includes leading multi-million-dollar capital programs, modernizing asset management systems, and implementing data-driven strategies to improve service delivery and system reliability. His expertise includes capital planning, regulatory compliance, emergency operations, and long-term financial stewardship of public infrastructure systems.

Johnson holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Purdue University, a Master of Science in Operations Research from Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering from The City College of New York. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE).

As Director of Public Works, Johnson will oversee the Town’s infrastructure systems, including streets, utilities, stormwater systems, and capital improvement initiatives, helping ensure reliable, efficient, and sustainable services for the Herndon community.
