Preservation Program Announcements

- The town launched a series of hands-on preservation workshops beginning in the Fall of 2025 with historic masonry cleaning workshop at the Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Click here for additional information. Check back for information on additional workshops in 2026!

- Funding is being sought through the Commonwealth History Fund grant program for the design and installation of wayfinding and gateway signage for the historic district.  If awarded, the signs would be placed at strategic locations to reinforce district identity and clarify its extent.  Check back for more information on this project. Check back in early 2026 for updates!

Modifying Or Improving A Historic District Property?

Consult the Process Guide and Reference Guide, then complete the Historic District Property Modification Form, and email it to historicdistrict@herndon-va.gov.  Town staff will review and verify whether the proposed modification is exempt from any review or requires either staff review or Historic District Review Board review.    

Most applications for property modifications are reviewed by staff however the larger change are reviewed by Historic District Review Board.  The Historic District Review Board (HDRB) page contains information on that board and the board meetings.
