Overview

Herndon is currently reviewing its housing policies and evaluating the available and feasible options for retaining, securing, and creating diverse housing to meet the need within town.  A consultant has been retained to assist with a housing study intended to collect and assess current housing characteristics in the Town and available regulatory options that may be available and beneficial to the town as it develops housing strategies. 

The consultant, TPMA, has completed phase one of the project, which studied Herndon's demographics, housing stock, estimated housing needs, and affordability index compared to the region. A copy of the final report and consultant presentation from the February 17, 2026, joint meeting of the Planning Commission and Town Council is available for viewing. The Town Council passed interim policy guidance during the March 24, 2026, public hearing. The consultant is currently working on phase two to develop a Memorandum of Agreement with the Fairfax County Housing Authority to further the town's affordable housing objectives.
