Tuesday, Feb 19: A winter storm is in the forecast for the region. Click here for info on snow removal in the Town of Herndon. Residents are asked to move cars OFF of streets prior to the storm, so plows can get through. Recyclables will not be collected Wednesday, Feb 20; they will be collected town-wide on Thursday, Feb 21. Liberal leave is in effect for town employees on Wednesday, Feb 20. Parks & Rec classes and programs before 3pm are cancelled.

Community Forestry is a joint effort between the town staff, the citizens and resources available from other organizations.  It not only involves new plantings and maintenance of existing trees, it involves protecting our environment for the future, educating ourselves and our children and taking the time to enjoy our efforts as well as the efforts of past generations.

The town's program is managed by the Community Forester, a certified arborist, who is responsible for:

  • health and welfare of trees on Town Property
  • review of plant material for new development
  • providing citizens with info and advice on the protection of trees against insects and diseases
  • providing educational programs for adults and children

Insects- Good & Bad

Although many insects are beneficial, some can spread disease to trees and other plants.  Visit this page for more information.

Local Wildlife

Herndon is home to many different species of wildlife.  Visit the Fairfax County Wildlife page for a listing of local species and information on wildlife management.  One of the largest predatory animals found locally are coyotes.  The county coyote webpage provides specific FAQs related to this mammal.

Opportunities are available throughout the year for individuals or groups who wish to volunteer. Whether you are interested in helping with a stream clean-up, adopting a stretch of town roadway, or if you are a Scout looking for an Eagle Scout project, please contact the Community Forester.

Herndon is dedicated to strengthening its urban forestry programs and has been a certified Tree City USA Community for many years.
