Herndon's uniqueness and charm owes largely to its efforts on retaining and enhancing the character of its local Heritage Preservation Districts.  This webpage offers information on Herndon's preservation planning efforts past and current.

The Town is pursuing a reboot of its Heritage Preservation Program.  This effort will include district awareness and public outreach campaigns, new historic resource surveys, and a new Heritage Preservation Handbook with new Design Guidelines.  See the HERITAGE PRESERVATION PROGRAM UPDATE webpage for more info. For owners of properties or businesses within the Heritage Preservation Districts, the Heritage Preservation Review Board (HPRB) page contains guidance on maintaining and updating your property and the Town regulations and processes for exterior changes.

The design, form, and material of exterior changes to properties within the Heritage Districts are guided by the following documents:

Herndon Heritage Preservation Handbook

Herndon Downtown Pattern Book

Herndon Zoning Ordinance

Pre-Approved Exterior Modifications: Some exterior updates have been pre-approved by the HPRB and can be administratively approved such as fences and paint colors.

Historic Marker Program In 2015, the Town began a local historic marker program to memorialize sites of historic significance.  The Town will be installing several markers starting in 2016.
