Herndon strives to offers a balanced transportation network with safe, accessible, and convenient means to drive, take transit, bike, walk through the continuous improvement of town streets, sidewalks, trails, and transit facilities.  This page provides the ongoing planning activities for the town's transportation network. 


Roadway Safety Action Plan

Funded largely by the Safe Streets for All federal program, this plan takes a wholistic look at the safety of all town transportation facilities and evaluates them based on available the crash information and other quantitative and qualitative datasets.  It will establish a direction and framework for mitigating unsafe facilities and identify the strategies and objectives necessary to ensure a reduction in accidents resulting in serious injuries.  Check back for more information for this on-going effort.  

Complete Streets Policy

The town is developing a town-wide Complete Streets Policy that would set specific direction on how accommodations for all vehicle modes will be considered and applied when designing, maintaining, reviewing transportation projects in Herndon.

Major Funding Applications

Most of the transportation network improvements in town are funded through various regional, state, and federal programs.  The town is currently seeking funding for or has received funding for the following projects:

East Elden Street Widening & Enhancement

South Elden Street Improvements

Herndon Parkway & Sunset Park Drive Access

Central Elden Walkability

Walking & Biking in Town- Herndon's density and mix of uses lends itself to non-motorized trips, planning efforts are underway to bolster the existing facilities into an integrated bicycle and pedestrian network.
