The Herndon Police Department provides 24-hour continuous police coverage for the community and responds to calls for service, renders assistance to persons in need, conducts investigations, and strives to preserve the peace while preventing crime.  

There are six patrol squads; each is supervised by a Sergeant.  The Patrol Section is commanded by two Lieutenants (Assistant Field Operations Section Commanders).
