Move differently. Move safely. Move Herndon forward.

The Town of Herndon developed a comprehensive Roadway Safety Action Plan (RSAP) to make our streets safer for everyone—whether you walk, bike, roll, drive, or take transit. Funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program, the plan guides safety investments to reduce and eventually eliminate serious traffic injuries and fatalities. We used a data-driven and community-informed approach to identify safety challenges and prioritize improvements where they’re needed most.

The Town of Herndon has one of the highest rates of severe traffic injuries in Northern Virginia, despite relatively low speed limits. This plan equips us with the tools—and elevates the voices of our community—to make meaningful, lasting change and create safer streets for everyone. This effort is part of the Town’s broader commitment to equity, accessibility, and livability.

What Is the RSAP?

RSAP leverages the Safe System Approach, which uses a holistic framework to make places safer for people. Principles and objectives of a Safe System Approach have been outlined by US DOT.

The RSAP was a year-long planning effort to:

  • Analyze crash and traffic safety data
  • Engage with community members and stakeholders
  • Identify high-risk areas across Herndon
  • Recommend strategies and projects to improve safety for all roadway users

The Roadway Safety Action Plan

The final Roadway Safety Action Plan was adopted by Town Council on April 28, 2026. The final plan can be found here.
