Move differently. Move safely. Move Herndon forward.

The Town of Herndon is developing a comprehensive Roadway Safety Action Plan (RSAP) to make our streets safer for everyone—whether you walk, bike, roll, drive, or take transit. Funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program, the plan will guide safety investments to reduce and eventually eliminate serious traffic injuries and fatalities.

This effort is part of the Town’s broader commitment to equity, accessibility, and livability. We are using a data-driven and community-informed approach to identify safety challenges and prioritize improvements where they’re needed most.

What Is the RSAP?

The RSAP leverages the Safe System Approach, which uses a holistic framework to make places safer for people. Principles and objectives of a Safe System Approach have been outlined by US DOT.

The RSAP is a year-long planning effort to:

  • Analyze crash and traffic safety data
  • Engage with community members and stakeholders
  • Identify high-risk areas across Herndon
  • Recommend strategies and projects to improve safety for all roadway users

Your input will help shape the final plan and ensure it reflects the real experiences of those who live, work, and travel in Herndon.

The Roadway Safety Action Plan

The draft RSAP is now available for public review and comment. The draft plan can be found here:  Draft Roadway Safety Action Plan

If you would like to provide any feedback, please submit comments using this Microsoft Feedback Form by February 28, 2026.

Please note that the RSAP references several technical memorandums that contain further details and supporting information. If you would like to know more regarding the technical backup, please reach out to Town staff at the email below.

Step into the planning process – your input counts!

The Town of Herndon has one of the highest rates of severe traffic injuries in Northern Virginia, despite relatively low speed limits. This plan equips us with the tools—and elevates the voices of our community—to make meaningful, lasting change and create safer streets for everyone.

Together, we can build a safer, more connected Herndon. Your feedback will directly inform strategies like:

  • Safer crosswalks and intersections
  • Improved bike and pedestrian infrastructure
  • Safety improvements for vulnerable users such as seniors, youth, and those with disabilities
